Seasonal Affective Disorder
Summer is the water lilies
that I see
being born anew
after nine months of ice
Summer is the mourning dove
that I hear
calling me
welcoming me
to the new day
Summer is the fresh grass
that I smell
and that I know
is teeming with the new life
of ladybugs and dandelions
Summer is the warm rain
that I feel
on my face
cleansing the tears
of winter’s sorrows
Summer is the honey
that I taste
coating my tongue
making my bitter words
and kisses
sweet
Summer is the thought
in my mind
that everything will be happy
at least for the next three months

I was inspired to write this piece by someone in my life who struggles with seasonal affective disorder. I wanted to capture the hope, and new life that summer brings, while subtlety hinting at the anxiety and animosity felt towards the emotions that come with winter.
