Empty Words
the elephant in the room,
the building tension between them
almost static.
her lips as dry as
the empty words they form;
a simple, crisp
sorry.
but it was only sounds,
as the letters passed right through him;
the s through his ears
the o through his heart
the two r’s through his two desperate eyes
the y through his skin leaving nothing but
a trail of hurt
no amount, combination of letters
could change
her
b-e-t-r-a-y-a-l
B for broken promises
E for expectations
T for tired
R for resentful
A for accusations
Y for young and foolish
A for ashamed
L for love, vanished.
a silent moment,
leaves the elephant in its place.
and he replies with a word as empty as hers,
simple, crisp
Goodbye.
