Deer Down
The alarm goes off, it shows an early morning.
Too early.
Above are dark skies with stars that are seen so bright
The cold air hits the skin shown like frigid water in winter.
Walking what seems like forever on the same trail walked so many times before. Snap, snap, snap from the leaves under feet.
Be quiet! Always stay quiet.
Finally, the perfect tree.
The heart races with excitement.
Sitting in the tree with the bow in hand, trying not to make a sound.
As the sun comes up,
It offers some warmth with the bright orange ray of light.
Snap! Listen to the dried, fall leaves.
Something is moving.
Over the hill, three dark monsters stand.
Shadows of their massive rack show.
Move close, please.
Energetic squirrels chase each other in the leaves,
So distracting.
Seeing the deer move closer and closer,
The heart races and races.
Snap, the arrow is pulled.
Aim with the pin.
Stop shaking!
Deep breath.
Hold it.
Success! What a good start to this early, cold morning.
