During a Time of War

I sit comfortably in bed, daydreaming about holding their hand

I am happy during a time of war

My biggest hardship is unrequited feelings

I am happy that I don’t live in Ukraine

Where a woman told Russian soldiers to put the nation’s flower seeds in their pockets

Where a kindergarten was blown up

I don’t have to worry about my home being destroyed

I don’t have to sleep in a subway, cold, because I was forced to

I sit in bed mildly annoyed about getting up to shut my door because it no longer latches

I am okay during a time of war

My biggest hardship is my house slowly falling

I am happy that I don’t live in Palestine

Where a man who was mentally 7 years old was beaten and harassed by the IDF

Where kids learn in fear that their school is next to be raided

I don’t have to worry about my home being destroyed

I don’t have to run to a neighboring country that is only marginally safer

I sit in bed anxious about the next law that will attempt to erase my existence

I am unhappy during a time of war

My biggest hardship is wondering if I will be taken away because my mother accepts me for being transgender
