Unconditional
You are my sweet old friend,
like a child’s teddy bear. A little smelly
and scraggly, but nevertheless
warm and loving. The fur you wear
as white and pure
as your smile. Forever happy
and endlessly affectionate,
just as always.
You still act like a puppy
when you roll over, exposing
your little warm belly.
The sound of your pitter-patter
and labored breathing
let me know you are here
with me for now.
Even though I know
we don’t have forever,
I will show you
the same unconditional love
you have shown me,
for the rest of your days.

This piece is about my little grump of a dog. He is my first dog and I got him in 2012 when he was 4 years old and I was 7, so we've grown up together for most of our lives. I feel especially close to him since I'm an only child. He is getting older and I know when he's gone it will destroy me, so I use writing as an outlet to process my feelings in a way.
Thanks for reading :)
