Everybody knows that death has a twin named grief.

They are the worst pair for anyone to come across.

But they work differently with whomever they do meet.

For me,

They are the cruelest things I know in this world.

Starting with death.

They let you grow the most beautiful bond with someone and then take them at the snap of their fingers whenever they like.

Most people don’t know the existence of death personally until later on in life.

but,

I met them at the ripe age of 6.

And since then death has always come up with a new way to make its presence known.

From being crushed in a major earthquake, to murder, to breast cancer, to old age, and then just recently sudden death in other words, because they felt like it.

From that, death seems like the worst of the pair,

But actually, it’s grief.

Grief likes to hang out in the shadows and wait for the perfect time to pop up.

It is like a game for them.

Either they pop up the second death is finished with their job,

Or sometimes they wait days, weeks, months, or even years.

Letting you think that they are going to allow you to be strong and keep pushing on as life is quickly moving along.

Until just when you think you’ve gotten into this grove when you can picture life with them no longer here.

Then grief burst through the door,

Open that wound that you spent all this time patching up,

And pour salt on it.

Because the pain feels so much worst because you couldn’t let your feelings out before.

They turn their backs on you and force you to hold the pieces while you put them back together with only two hands.

You would think with all the deaths I’ve experienced in my life I would know how to handle those two.

I thought I did too,

Tricking myself by saying all the memories are still there.

If you miss them close your eyes.

It worked for so many years,

But what do you tell yourself now when you close your eyes and there are no memories?

But death and grief waiting for you with someone new.

I just recently lost my aunt two days ago suddenly. It still doesn't feel real to me and I guess I wrote this to help with my grieving process.

I'm sorry for the loss of your Aunt...May her soul rest in peace...
BTW, your poem was really powerful and I just have one thing to say, write more and be that person who your Aunt would be really proud of to see...🙂🙂🙂
