Everything changed.

Malls 

morphed from shopping 

to examining,

finding exits to prepare

observing everyone’s faces

just in case. 

Public bathrooms 

turned from convenience to trauma 

flinching at any sound

Big groups of people 

a new sense of claustrophobia, 

not due to the size of space

but the fear of never getting out.

The author's comments:

When I was a child I was in a mall shooting, even though I was young it altered the way I view malls and public spaces in general. We had to write a poem in my AP Literature class and this seemed like a good way to express how it changed me as a person.
