2022 Traditions Contest: Diwali
in early november lies the “festival of lights"
where mom puts tea candles inside
tiny clay pots called diyas,
that warm our home with their soft glow
as our kitchen fills with
indian sweets like ladoo and peda.
then mom takes out pots of colored powder
in magenta hues and aqua shades,
and pinches the powder between her fingers as she
guides it around in loops and intricate patterns
forming what we call rangoli.
diwali is a tradition that lies in our blood, yet most importantly our hearts,
wrapping us in warmth amid cold fall nights.
