fern
do i ever get to be me
or is it a fantasy
do i need to cut my hair shorter
should i dress more masculine
should i spell it out for you?
big letters tattooed on my forehead
“get it right”
it’s a one syllable word
it’s Fern
it’s not that it’s a stupid name
you’re just homophobic
it’s not that you forget
it’s that you dead name me when you’re angry to get under my skin
you don’t use the wrong pronouns because you don’t understand
you just don’t care enough

this poem was written from a very deep place after coming out as non binary. my prefered name is fern and a lot of people choose to not respect that.
