You are a Lady
“You are a lady”, they say
You can’t do this or that
But will we ever have the rights
To do what makes us feel free?
Or are we still going to hear,
“Don’t wear this, it’s too short
Cover yourself up, it’s too open
Get yourself ready
Don’t swear, it’s not what ladies do
Sit straight
Walk normal
Don’t interrupt a man
Stop eating
Slim down
You look like a skeleton
Eat more
Talk more
Talk less
Don’t walk alone
Don’t be late
Don’t talk to boys, you’re a lady
Why are you upset?”
That’s what a real lady hears
But what are we hiding
Hiding our feelings
Our wishes
Our dreams
Our emotions
All we want is,
Not to be forbidden from what we want to do
We want to stay late
Walk alone
Walk like we want
Dress like we want
Eat how much we want
We just want to feel free
And be treated like men do.

I'm a senior at high school. I wrote this poetry to show what others, especially men, don't know what women go through.
