The Back
"I stayed in the front yard all my life
I want a peek at the back
Where it’s rough and untended and hungry
Weed grows
A girl gets sick of a rose"
I want a peek at the back
Where everything isn’t a blinding white
Where grit meets greed
Where everyone is in need
A rose is rich, and red, and beautiful
A rose is rigid, and rabid, and barbaric
It makes a lovely center piece for your garden
But pick it, and you’ll bleed
Let me peek in the back
I know it isn’t where I belong
I know that is where all the hurt in
The world stems from
I wish to bleed with them
I wish to know what makes them bleed
There is more beyond this superficial world
Poverty, abuse, addiction, death
Let me peek in the back
None of this is real
There’s more beyond this bright, white light
It blinds me
It shields me
