TALES FROM A MIDWEST AUTUMN
I want foggy mornings
with pungent coffee
And acoustic guitar on the radio.
I want Saturdays spent at the cider mill,
Or Saturdays spent
in the comfort of my bed
After a long week.
I want big sweaters-
The kind you could drown in,
The kind you feel warm in.
I want candles,
Scents of peach
and rose
filling the space around me.
I want colorful leaves
Painting the canvas
That is the world
And filling my heart
with crimson and burgundy.
Long, flat roads inhabited by passing cars
And the ghosts
Of Midwests’ past,
Are full of wide open sky and a familiar dullness
That we welcome with open arms.
Giving life to the autumn
We’ve come to know and love
In the place
Where we know no different.
