Death.

such a bittersweet fate

with the worst aftertaste.

Promise me

you won’t say goodbye.

that it won’t be the last time.

and swear

you’ll always open up your eyes.

i’ll believe you, even if it’s a lie.

to leave

means to realize absence.

those i cherish

that will be gone.

alone.

is then what i become.

The author's comments:

I hope to convey with this piece the fear I have of one day needing to face the loss of those I hold close to my heart. My poem is titled "Oath," specifically because it is a plead to death not to take those I love. The actual oath can be read when connecting together the first lines of each stanza: "Death. Promise me and swear to leave those I cherish alone."
