History's Trojan Horse

When I was younger, Hercules was my hero,

Athena became my idol,

Zeus was the king, the loving husband,

To Queen Hera, mother supreme,

And Hades was evil.

These were tales spun between the cracks,

Of the picture perfect family, spiraling

Into darkness, intertwining with the trees,

And when nature parts - only the truth remains standing.

All fantasies vanish,

As no morality, no loyalty is seen -

Only killing and immoral deeds

For vile Hercules was no hero.

I am no longer naive enough

To turn a blind eye to petty strife,

Where intelligence became spite, only part of an ego,

Power went to her head as the jealous goddess

Remained on her pedestal, but hubris

Is not to be idolised.

The clouds cleared out, I can see the sky

Where there is no honorable king of any kind,

Only one that cheats, one that lies

Only a hurricane, no longer the reason for stars in your eyes.

More words will come to mind, but

Only one will remain - Zeus

 Is a crime.

The mosaic is crumbling,

My innocence has faded,

No longer mother supreme-

More the jealous, controlling, manipulative remainder

Of what was once a sweet dream.

Hera saw only perfection,

Leaving no room for alterations

Even for her own brother,

Lord Hades

Classified as evil abductor,

Just for following instructions.

History warned us of the gilded Trojan Horse,

Seeming perfect, seeming sweet, seeming kind

Only to be far worse;

The apple is dipped in poison, the jar contains evil spirits,

Stories paint in shimmering gold

And the horse holds warriors.

We were warned about a gilded cage,

We were warned about the Trojan Horse

Yet, we still ignored -

Leaving crippling, guilting

Remorse.
