a semi-colon means

this sentence isn’t over yet,

another clause

follows connects—

another pause between breaths,

before the next

inhale, yes,

we breathe in

we are alive

the semi-colon knows

we are just waiting for our moment,

it gives us time

to recollect

our nouns our verbs our mess

on the other side,

time to pause, shake off, reflect

take a tentative step

tentative, yes

because we’ve stepped across the line,

the comma the dot

into blank space this time,

here where the page is fresh

here where our ink may bleed,

but the flow won’t recede,

like the pause between breaths,

the clause the semi-colon connects

here we take our first step,

here our story does not end, no

our story does not end;

here we begin again

The author's comments:

Project Semicolon was founded to help curb the suicide epidemic. An author uses a semicolon when they choose not to end the sentence; it is a metaphor for saying your story isn't over yet.
