My Ocean

Adrift on an ocean blue

Below a sky of pink

One often wonders what lies beneath the sea

All around me many things are clear as day

While unclear at night, they are uncovered once more at first light

But the oceans secrets lay deep below the surface

Where I may venture ever so briefly

Unless I wish to drown discovering this dark knowledge

And still this rackety ship

Unstable at her core

Wishes it could become a submarine and see what remains to be shown

Why- I can’t understand

Why I may not pass on my own

Why I am to be suffocated if I do so alone

Why not allow me to figure things out

Unlock the grave of mystery the waters won’t allow

Even so… even if I could go

I still would be blinded to the secrets below

I would be in a constant night with creatures out of sight

Creatures that could eat me alive for finding out what need be mine

If only there was time…

Perhaps I’m being selfish having forgotten my promise

But I know there must be treasure chests lying there, drenched in mystery

If rid of them, if opened up

It would benefit the ocean and myself for a long time to come

No more polluting the lovely blue tones

And no more hiding from what needs to be told

Maybe even a bond

More true than true

One I hope to value before it sees me through

The shores our only connection

The shallow the farthest we may go

Yet I’ll never stop wanting

To know more about the beautiful ocean

With secrets buried deep below…

The author's comments:

This poem represents an exploration of self. The desire to understand oneself and the risk it entails is reflected in the use of ocean imagery. Such a vast body of water is both beautiful and dangerous. To discover what lies below is akin to uncovering your innermost self. We often go through life unaware of who we are because we fear what we might find and what that could mean. However, as seen in this poem, it is not only about fear but curiosity. A need to unveil what we do not yet know. No matter the cost.
