The Loss of the Tiger
Through the thick mist on the mountain ridge
A beautiful beast that stalks and prowls
The fiercest, strongest, and the most glorious
If you listen carefully you can hear it growl
Chosun’s patient forests are empty, missing its king
Deer and boar graze gently without fear
Without the tiger’s spirit, Korea is in despair
And its mountains shed a million tears
He hears the snapping snarl of the man-eater
Lurking in the bushes, loading a gun
Heart racing, hands shaking as he aims
Two golden eyes pierce his heart like a burning sun
Chosun’s patient forests are empty, missing its king
Deer and boar graze gently without fear
Without the tiger’s spirit, Korea is in despair
And its mountains shed a million tears
Boom as the bullet rips the beast’s chest
Dark red blood soaks the soft fur
As it roars in agony and shock turning into a statue
It falls to its demise, its vision blurs

I wrote this piece for my ELA project. It is about the extinction of the tiger in Korea under Japanese colonialism. However, the damage to the tiger population had already started during the independent period of Korea. I also wanted to show the relationship with the modern society and nature.
