"chemistry between people is the strangest science of all" - Bridgett Devoue

for so long, i’ve waited–
yesterday, you smiled my way.
today, five years have passed and
your sage eyes haven’t
wandered my way since.

a river runs between us,
eroding this picture i’ve made
of you in my mind–
you’re crumbling before my eyes
and are whisked away
by the current.

i’m waiting, but you’ll never return.
yet every rainstorm,
emerald light dances off the raindrops.

no longer will i see a twinkle in your eye,
but you’ll always reappear.

why do you refuse
to turn my way?
if you came, i wouldn’t hurt you–
you’ve been through enough.

some divine force put me
on this earth
for you–
this, i am certain of.

and to them,
i pray.
that you are happy–
that you remain fulfilled, until your final breath–
that sunrays kiss your cheeks,
and that moonlight brushes your hair.

though i may never see you again,
i hope that happiness
trails in your wake.
joy will follow you around,
a golden retriever of hope.

and after the storm,
i pray that you see every rainbow.

The author's comments:

this poem is for someone that has made a huge impact on my life. they're leaving for college and it's weird to think they won't be nearby anymore, even though we haven't talked in a long time. I suppose this poem is about growing up and growing apart from someone you were once so close to. moving on to college is a little bit like closure from the relationship – or perhaps it's the final chapter of our story. maybe they are one and the same.
