Depression
Depression,
You take away my loved ones. You remove the happiness from a person's life. For no good reason do you swoop in to ruin one’s perfectly okay day and bar them from their ability to appreciate this life made for them. You make them feel like they are less by kicking them when they are down. Throwing obstacles after them constantly to prove that nothing can break you. And when they seek help… when they seek help… you’re there to shame them and disagree with anything one thoughtful person might say to keep them safe from their own minds. What’s wrong with you? You break people to a point where they cut themselves, ruin their beautiful bodies. If that wasn’t enough for you, you send them to kill themselves and in turn, hurt their loved ones around them. When they seek help, you tell them that they’re weak for doing it. Any medicine they use to attempt to rid their body of you, you deny it. They are left unable to take part in trivial things, to take care of themselves, to speak to their loved ones. What is wrong with you? Not only do you attempt to weave your way into my own mind, but you surround me with so many other people suffering from your infamous fate. You are undeniably stubborn and difficult to manage. So quick to ruin peoples lives just to turn around and hurt the people that mean most to them.
Have you no shame? Do you carry any burdens from hurting around six-point-two million people in the U.S. alone? Would you even dare show your face to the strong ones? One day we will track you down and remove your toxicity from the atmosphere. You will no longer thrive in this place and you will surely not be welcomed. Depression, why do you choose this place where hate is already found too often. We already carry enough burdens and are forced to exceed any and all expectations in this world. We are stressed enough, some of us are close to finished. We will make it, but they will not, because of YOU.
Depression, you are not welcome here. Stop taking away the lives of the living. Continue to thrive in your own little circle of the dead.

My name is Alexis Nelson, I am currently 17 years old, an honors high school student who teaches dance in her "free" time. I wrote this piece as a stream of consciousness during a time in which someone very close to me was suffering with Depression. While I don't directly suffer from the illness, I am surrounded by so many that do and in turn find struggle myself.
