Understanding
With tearful eyes they watched him suffer, growing weaker every day.
I sat in the other room not a concern in my mind but to play.
Although we loved him dearly they knew he could not stay.
They told me to hug him goodbye and sent me far away.
That night a golden heart stopped beating, calloused hands were stilled.
My family mourned the night away while I sat in another house and giggled.
When I returned my grandma met me with tears in her eyes.
She tried to explain to my little mind that her husband had died.
I stared for what felt like hours not understanding the situation
as my family loomed over me waiting for me to realize the relation.
I still did not understand why everyone was staring.
Grandpa was probably sitting outside, watching the squirrels and glaring.
I went to the living room, still not grasping reality, my heart not really throbbing
It would not be till years later that I would realize and start sobbing.

Dear Poetry Editor:
I am submitting three poems entitled “Ode to Marching Band,” “Hero?,” and “Understanding,” for consideration in Teen Ink.
I currently attend Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City Iowa and I am set to graduate in 2022. My creative writing teacher recommended I submit my manuscript for consideration in Teen Ink.
Please recycle my manuscript if it does not fit your editorial needs. I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Olivia Greaves
