Mans Best Friend
Let me tell you about my friend
That I hold so dear
I hope our friendship never ends
Let me tell you about them here
I get oh-so excited to see you
When you walk through the door
I anticipate your arrival like a statue
It is the moment I wait for
I often beg to go outside
Just to take a sniff of the air
Then immediately long to come inside
To find you giving me that irritated glare
When a new adventure must begin
I wake you the only way I know how
Many licks to the face and skin
To signal we must go right now
I sometimes steal your shoe
And will get scolded for such behavior
But it is only because it smells like you
I was trying to save it for later
How my day brightens instantly
When I hear the word “treat”
I sit and wait for my reward patiently
Like a soldier in a fleet
I see your shoes go on
Fearing you may leave
Running to the window
Hoping I don’t heave
As the sky grows dark and lights turn down
I hurry to bed for the perfect spot
I lay on your pillow and nestle around
Hoping you won’t kick me off
Knowing I am loved so much
With my perfect companion by my side
Snuggled up in soft touch
It fills my heart with pride

This piece was inspired by my dog and all of the things he does. I tried to make sense of his decisions and turn it into a poem.
