Snake Eyes

In a world of perceived happiness and freedom

Are we really content

There is so much to improve on

Smoke and mirrors

Hiding the truth from the public

Never knowing what’s really true or false

Who are we supposed to believe in

The people are doing a waltz.

Conspiracy clouds the minds of democracy

Good or bad

are we thinking morally

All we’re doing is trying to survive

In this era of indirect hostility.

Children born this year know nothing of the past

They only know what people tell them

Through machines and illusions of learning fast

They know nothing of playing outside and bathing in the sun

All they know is what they see and making friends

where there are none.

Government officials worrying about their own wellbeing

Is the world a better place

Than what is was when we were singing

Out in the streets vocalizing our beliefs

Now we’re silenced and speaking through screens.

Words are words and actions are actions

With an ulterior motive it’s forced interaction

Truth in the eyes of society can be seen as false to an individual

craving assimilation makes the masses more divisible.

The author's comments:

This poem is inspired by the experiences and traumatic experiences the people of America had endured during 2021. Riots, Black Lives Matter movements, COVID-19 and many more significant events are just a few things that we have had to deal with in these past couple of months. We are all survivors.
