the so-called land of the free
“Let America be America again,”
That’s what the privileged people said,
But maybe the America that used to be,
Is an America that’s already dead.
Or, maybe this version of America,
That we all want to see,
Is something we must strive for,
Not an example from our history.
“Let America be America again,”
They said with such conviction,
But calling America “the land of the free”
Is nothing but a contradiction.
Let America be destructive, selfish and cruel?
Let America be entitled, and exempt from every rule?
Let America take what it wants with no consequences?
Let America take advantage of those with inadequate defenses?
Let America discriminate those who are different?
This isn’t the America we want to be… is it?
“Let America be America again,”
Is a dead command
Spoken by the few Americans
Who are actually free in the freedom land.

For an assignment in my English class, we had to write a version of Langston Hughes' poem, "Let American Be America Again." I wrote this poem and my teacher told me to publish it somewhere, so I did. :)
