you teach me that
i mustn’t speak over others.
is this the reason
my words are taken
shoved back down my throat
before they can even roll off my tongue?
you teach me that
i must hide my skin
from the shrewd eyes of men.
they cannot restrain themselves
so i must do it for them.
come my darlings now be free.
my luscious curls, hiss and coil.
and i have learned.
but i will not be bound
by your shackles
that suffocates my soul.
