Who Is America?
Yesterday I woke up
I brushed my teeth and jumped in the shower
I ate my cereal
Drank my Coffee
And then went to school
Today you wake up
You brush your teeth, you shower, you get dressed
You munch your breakfast
Drink your coffee
You go to work
A monotonous stream of workers
Toiling away
Grateful for another day
But not wishing to stay
Their minds are fresh
However their bodies stressed
Is this America?
Is this the land of the free?
Why must,
Many Americans drive to work,
While others walk?
Why must,
Many Americans earn sunflower seeds,
While others earn filet mignons?
Why must,
Many Americans talk,
While others sing?
Why must,
Some Americans sleep on pavement,
While others debate consent?
Why must,
Some Americans get sick and die,
While others in hospitals are given a second try?
Why must,
Many Americans enter the workforce after high school,
While others get to party at college researching cool biofuel?
This is not fair
We are not free
Until equality sits on the tips of our tongues
And Justice tears through our tyrannical society
Are we to be free in our democracy
Is that America?
Is this America?
A society where screams, coughs, and respiratory pain
Seem so real for too many
People dying in the streets
Protesters crushed by government force
Free is not what we see.
Pain, suffering, exploitation, intrepidation, division, isolation,
Where wealthy accumulate Penthouses
While the poor barely can afford blouses
Currupution chaos, blood shed, and misery
A country that deprives generational wealth from those who Built it with their blood and tears
A country where something so simple so useful
Like wearing a mask has become political.
A country where the police shoot our neighbor’s sons.
A land divided by facts and faith.
Ruled by leaders who put themselves first.
A land Controlled by corporations stealing our wages
However, this is not America
Tomorrow we wake up.
We brush our glistening teeth.
We scrub our hair and body in the shower
We enjoy our breakfast and drink our coffee.
We go to work.
We work hard
We love our neighbors
We say our prayers
We cherish our friends and kiss our family
When in crisis
We are resilient
We are Strong
We keep our faith
Together we come out on top
We are grateful for
Our essential workers
Our public servants
Our scientists
Those on active duty in our great military
Our veterans
And those who put their life on the line so that we may rise every morning.
We celebrate
Our diversity
Our freedom
Our democracy
Our hope
But most of all we fight for justice.
We make tomorrow twice as good as today.
Together We are America
