The Fool

My story isn’t long

it's simply dull

and black and white

as chess boards

I rode a wooden horse

and ate meat off bones

of the less fortunate

I cheered chalices with kings

and ran from horsemen

and jabberwockies

I swam inside a bloody pool

and ate fruit from the ground

fresh and sour

Cupidity for knowledge

and disdain for impulsiveness

is quite tedious

even the oldest and wisest

of us were once young and naive

Children in meadows

or in church

in itchy collars and tight shoes

fussing in classrooms

or picking the scabs off our knees

My reflection smiles

evil as the garden of Eden

but still so young and shiny

and I smile back

My story isn’t long

it's simply unfinished

and grey as an old man's hair

May my hair never grey

and my story never dull

The author's comments:

I wanted the poem to have a medieval sound to it since the title comes from the tarot card "the fool" which I thought matched the tone. the poem is about the inner immaturity and narcissism in us all, again tying back to "the fool"s card.
