The Best of Us Are Mortal
The best of us are mortal.
Like rain, we evaporate and disappear.
Leaving those behind who hold us dear.
Time is not our friend.
It is an ever flowing waterfall,
That seems like it has no end.
The best of us are mortal.
But we wish that we were more.
We won’t have to say goodbye to each other,
And cry until we’re sore.
I wish that there were more words on the page,
And more pages in the book.
Now that the story’s over,
There’s nowhere else for me to look.
The best of us are mortal,
But we thought that you were more.
The traces of you that we can find,
Will be found deep inside our lore.
I wish we had more time,
To tell you how we feel, to give thanks and to bask in your shine.
The rain grows cold,
My head hangs low.
I listen to the stories that were told,
While I wait for the rainbow.
The story comes to an end,
As I write my final goodbye.
There’s no way to mend,
The tears that drop from my eye.
One last word from me:
You remain in my heart, at my very core
The best of us are mortal,
But you, my friend, were definitely more.
