The Day I Lost My Grandpa
Waiting.
Nothing else we can do,
I am staring at my phone
knowing all that will come is bad news.
Pacing.
I cannot seem to stand still;
this day will not end
until…
Bedtime.
I close my eyes;
this cycle will start over
once I rise.
Waking.
In the dead of night,
family standing over me
suddenly aware my grandpa must have lost his fight.
Crying.
My sister hugging me tight,
tears in our eyes
all we can do is pray tonight.
Morning.
The only thing worse than saying goodbye,
was sitting in a room
watching my grandma cry.
Ringing.
The church bells chime as we enter;
I see so many unfamiliar faces
and feel darker than ever.
Trumpets.
“Taps” plays throughout the air;
my grandpa has full military honors -
this sadness, nothing compares.
Silence.
One last goodbye,
he is in a better place now -
in heaven, he will fly.
