in my baby brother's lifetime
there’s a time in the morning, early,
when it’s still dark out,
when the snow’s smooth and soft,
pure and untouched
by criss-crossed pathways along the sidewalk,
made by shovels, those hidden weapons.
before pounding footsteps make their dents.
the snow’s still a mound of fluff,
but the streets will freeze over by dawn
so take advantage of this time
and be awake,
early morning before the sun hits
and everyone’s still asleep
carve your own pathway
protect yourself
from the dirt off the bottom of someone else’s boots
