The Nerves of Night
I lean back against my pillow,
And slide the book into my hands
My eyes scan the thin paper pages
Unable to comprehend the jumble of words
My brain is in another universe-
Where anxiety is the sun
And I orbit around it
No school for 2 weeks-
That has to be bad
Why now?
Why Covid?
What about the flu?
Measles, or mumps?
Where did it come from?
Where will it go?
The possibilities are endless
And I worry of each one
Not realizing that it could be OK-
That it would be OK
I’d have to suffer in that universe-
But just for a short while
Because the next morning,
I’d wake to a world of mending
A world I hadn’t seen before-
One that only comes out when
It is hit with something so tremendous,
Immense, and terrifying.
