Insomnia

The clock ticks by

11 pm...

Darkness surrounds me

The house makes sounds to me

The water rushes through the pipes in the walls ever so often

My internal clock is broken

Counting sheep is a joke

Melatonin can not save me now

My mind wanders in circles

With no escape insight

 it loops continuously

The clock ticks by

12 am… 1 am…

The moon shines bright through the arch in my window

The room fills with the sound of the sheets rustling around me

Eyes wide open

Perfusing blinking as the anger within starts the creep out

Annoyance floods my veins

The clock ticks by

2 am… 3 am…

My fingers feel a heartbeat

I hear thumping in my ears

Thump

Loud and ear shrieking

Like Edgar Allan Poe in the Tell-Tale Heart

Gradually getting louder

Thump

Thump

The clock ticks by

4 am…

My mind restless

My heart ready to beat out of my chest

My mind can’t cease

Imagination is going nonstop

Lines dancing through my sight as I force my eyes shut

The sight of peaceful sleep is far away

The clock ticks by

5 am…

The birds start to chirp and tweet

The wind knocks on my window

Waiting for me to let it in

False hope

Mind going down a slope

No end in sight

Goodnight

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem about the time in my life where I had trouble sleeping day after day which turned into months of no sleep. I wanted to share my experience through words.
