A Wireless Connection

Do trees have thoughts like you and I?

Do they talk to each other as we pass by?

Enough time these questions are not often given

With all that goes on in the world that we live in

With all of its beauty, the skies and the seas

Rarely do people consider the trees

And all of their magic, their knowledge, their sticks

But that ends today when I show you their tricks

They don’t have mouths, and don’t talk over tea

But trees still communicate just like you and me

Instead of a phone, or a cellular device

They use networks of mycorrhizal, which are nice

And what are these networks of mycorrhizal?

Don’t worry, I’ll tell you, it’s no trouble at all

Between the roots of the trees living way underground

A city is woven and news moves around

The roots are connected by thin fungal threads

That help them get water and then knowledge spreads

The trees and the fungi struck a deal, so I’ve heard

In exchange for carbohydrates, the fungi help spread the word

Of invaders nearby or toxins in the ground

Regardless of the issue, the alarm will then sound

Warning trees near and far of the dangerous threat

But not everyone knows about this friendship just yet

It’s not common knowledge like the days of the week

Not everyone cares enough to take even a peek

Into the lives of the trees and the bugs and the plants

Not everyone cares about green grass and ants

These networks function just like The New York Times

And they deserve more attention than my simple rhymes

Now it’s our job to share it, this knowledge we know

So spread the word now and let your heart grow

Knowing you are the one who helped save all the trees

You are working hard against big factories

That will smash, crash and break our Earth til the day

Where it no longer can function and just might go away

How can some say that we’re all not connected?

This world needs desperately to be protected

We don’t own it, we rent it, from the people to come

We can’t just destroy it and hand them a slum

There aren’t other Earths, no real ‘Planet B’

So let’s care for this one- just take it from me

Without it we’d die, like a fish stuck on land

We can’t just bury our heads in the sand

The climate change issue- we can fix it with trees!

For a brighter tomorrow, they are the keys!

And in some way the trees are way smarter than us

They can all get along without causing a fuss

And even though we can build planes, trains and cars

Does that really mean we have come all that far?

We still hurt each other with big sticks and knives

And we aren’t all that careful with each other’s lives

But if we look to the Earth in our times of need

Seek help from the trees, not money, not greed

We can all learn a lesson- take a leaf from their book

But how would that help? you might ask-  take a look

If humans got along like the roots of a tree

The world would get better, someday, you’ll see

There’d be no more hurting, no war, and no strife

Everyone would live to the fullest in life

The trees help me prove that we all need some help

And nobody is able to thrive by themself

So remember what we learned from the oaks and maples

Because their systems are real- they’re not just fables

Go forth from now on and preach the words of the trees

And what goes on underground while they sway in the breeze

Never forget the messages they send

To each other and to us... Goodbye now! The end

The author's comments:

I am very passionate about protecting our beautiful earth for the sake of humanity and all the other creatures we share it with. I believe that it is my calling to share my knowledge with others and inspire them to do the same. Poetry is one of my favorite styles of writing; Dr. Seuss' works played a huge role in my childhood education and his signiture style continues to influence my writing today. For this poem, my goal was to create a piece that blends scientific knowledge into simple, rhyming verses that all people can easily understand and enjoy. I hope my words allow people to feel as entranced by the natural world as I am.
