out of the blue

if you close your eyes in the sun

green spots appear

floating

uncertainty through a soft sigh

if you let your mind wander

and your thoughts linger

something funny happens where

you seem to forget everything

you once knew

it’s peaceful

really

not knowing troubles when

sky is bluer than

wings of

a butterfly flitting through the wind

and a gentle quietness

reminds you of things you

never knew

you forgot

i sat there

in the middle of the spring day

the one not quite but

almost summer

the one that existed only

because what happened now

thinking

it was fall

when red leaves littered the earth and

i was never

expecting

never knowing

not when winter came

the ground was wet with snow and

the leaves were drained of fiery red and

a singsong voice inside me wished

it was spring

not knowing that

spring would arrive but

hitched on its back something unseen that

wrenched it

upside

down

my eyes wander to a flower

a white one

gleaming in the sun

its petals poking through the soft brown

earth

it seemed so long ago that things

were all the same and i

thought that was the way

they’d be

forever

the clouds hide the sun

with their veils,

their misty gowns

and i think

just yesterday

we were all at school together

hoping for summer to come

but

now it’s here

and not in the way

we wanted

it’s dusk now

and the wind long settles

and a light flickers on in the neighbor’s house

then

something inside me

flickers on too

and

i’m

thinking

in a way

we’re still together

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem in remembrance of the times before quarantine, and how it has affected all of our lives. I used vivid imagery to express my sad and lonely feelings, sometimes inexpressible, but always real and always there. I hope that this poem may bring you to those days when you didn't know what to do either.
