I’ve Seen the Birds
I’ve seen the birds.
I’ve seen their shadows beneath my feet.
Standing in lines on wires: I’ve seen the birds.
I’ve seen their hearts beat as they’ve sung to the rhythm of mine.
Fighting to fly against the wind,
Hiding in the trees: I’ve seen the birds.
I’ve seen the multifarious patterns buried in their feathers.
Blending their lives in others,
Shrinking themselves too small: I’ve seen the birds.
I’ve seen their souls cry in the cold and laugh in the light.
Breathing the day in,
Sleeping without singing: I’ve seen the birds.
I’ve seen their wings spread with the might of their mother.
Moving with life,
Smiling in their eyes: I’ve seen the birds.
Like a ring slips onto a finger, a child recognizes life.
They’ve seen the birds.
