The Game That Got Me Through
The Game
At the plate, I see her glove
And realize this is the game that I love.
The pitch is coming right at me,
But all I want is to hit it past the tree.
Over the fence, so I can run the bases,
Get back home while my team rubs it in their faces.
We’ve had our time, now we have to switch,
But don’t you worry, our girl can really pitch.
I hear the sound right off the bat,
And all I can think is I hope I can get that.
Taking steps back, I see the ball,
My one and only goal is to not let it fall.
It’s very close, I have to dive,
I close my eyes and hope to survive.
I open my eyes and can’t believe what I see,
I caught the ball, I hope Coach is proud of me.
The Struggles
I’ve heard all hurtful things people have to say,
But I’ve learned to tune them out more day by day.
“She doesn’t deserve a spot on that team,”
“I know I’m better than her, this must be a scheme.”
I push myself day in and day out,
Only for them to look at me in doubt.
Blood, sweat, and tears is all I know,
But I still love the sport just like ten years ago.
You try to bring me down, but I stay strong
Because I know that someday I will prove you wrong.
My Best Friends
Without softball season, I feel so alone,
But I know because of this sport that I have grown.
I’ve made some friends that I know will last a lifetime,
And they make up for the enemies that were in my life part-time.
For those other girls, I wasn’t good enough
But with my teammates I don’t have to act all tough.
They support me no matter what, through my slumps and all
And they’re always there to help me up if I ever fall.
I’ve never really met anyone, quite like my teammates
And from this sport we get to travel between the states.
Making memories that I keep with me, here on out
I already know that these friendships won’t strike out.
