Just a Girl

You should really smile more.

Why do you cover up so much? No one likes a prude.

Stop showing so much skin. You’re asking for it.

Are you sure you want to eat that? You should really watch your figure.

You should really eat something. You look sick.

Why are you so quiet? You’re acting like a buzzkill.

Stop talking so loud. No one wants to hear your opinions.

You look tired. Put on some makeup and look presentable.

Why are you trying so hard? You look like a clown.

Express yourself. Everyone is special.

Stop complaining. No one wants to talk about your insecurities.

I’m not okay.

But no one wants to deal with your pain.

Everyone else has their life together.

Just keep your head down.

Don’t be unique.

Just try to survive.

Be nothing

Hey, why don’t you smile anymore?

The author's comments:

When I was writing this poem, I was constantly reminded of the double standards that women and girls face on a daily basis. The more I thought of what to say, the angrier I got, but it turned to sadness because I know that these are widespread issues. Personally, I have good periods of my life where I am thriving, yet I always seem to be reminded of the things in my life that weigh me down.
