Saying Goodbye
The phone rings,
My mother answers in an upbeat tone,
We all jump for joy knowing exactly what it’s about,
She ends the call and we get in the car,
We are on our way
Today was finally the day,
The day I get to meet my best friend,
The one who would be there for me my entire life,
We arrive at the building,
Entering with smiles on our faces
He runs up to me,
Licking my face and barking,
He sat down for me to pet him,
That was when I knew he was the one,
Not a care in the world,
It was finally happening
I never thought this day would come,
The day I would have to say goodbye,
I always knew it was coming,
Just not this sprightly,
I feel unprepared,
Cheated of my time
I’m not ready,
I can’t even imagine living without him,
Him not being by my side,
My inability to do anything for him,
A life without my best friend.

Recently my dog passed away, and this is sort of my way of remembering the very first time I got to see him and the last.
