Minivan Full of Life
It wasn’t the first time in the cozy house where we enjoyed
a toasty fire and a chiming grandfather clock
that is full of caring hearts and big smiles,
but everyone knew it would be the last time.
Bedroom after bedroom, memory after memory,
all created from one soul,
one kind and irreplaceable human being
lifeless in her bed after one last deep breath.
The sweet scent of the dusty glass perfume
that sits upon the empty dresser lingers.
It's a small piece of her.
A scent that brings life back into the dark room,
the stripped bed, and the empty closet where the monsters used to roam.
She will never ever be forgotten and loved,
that huge hearted grandma of mine.
Her smile is a pure image in my head,
Surprisingly even missing her stubbornness.
We all wish she were back driving in her rusty minivan,
but instead we are driving her minivan
celebrating the life she gave us.

My grandma just lost her battle with pancreatic cancer last week in her own home in hospice care. My entire family was there with her while she peacefully passed. I am so greatful I was there to be able to hear her last words but it was tough but I'm glad I was able to write this poem and hopefully it will thrive so my grandma's death can be deeply remembered.
