you don't look how i remember

i don't know what heartbreak looks like

in the movies it's

revenge

ice sculptures

other things too cold for gentle tongues

but here is not a movie

i'm sure if i stepped out

i'd fall back in

or keep my distance from the start.

i think i am saving the world again

i think photos tell more stories than we see

i think the world is a jumbled mess, but color coded perfectly.

someday i will visit a waterfall

someday i'll admit i love you

someday,

i will speak,

and you will listen again. you

will hold every word with chopsticks

and piece by piece,

dip them in sugar

raise them to your lips.

finally consume me with a careful hand

i want to find your best photo

keep it in my pocket

and sit with it while the sun rises.

rust only forms after water

did you ever think that

the rain wasn't so clean?

that maybe it was designed to destroy

or maybe the destruction comes

from each cheek unturned.

don't tell the jury what i know about love.

i will be in jail before we can kiss again

and our bars will be more than just friends.

my wings are aflame but the stars are made of fire too

they may catch me, but they cannot put me out.

The author's comments:

This piece is sort of interesting to me because I wrote it in pieces while in an ongoing relationship with someone, and I only realised after we broke up that I wanted to put them all together. I think it tells that story, while also feeling a bit disconnected, just like how I did writing them.
