Two Different Worlds
I am walking on a world,
With candy that is too sweet
And greasy fast food that is addictive.
I walk on a place with bright city lights,
that outshine the stars.
A world that dances to pop,
And sings along to country.
A place colored red, white, and blue.
A world so bright and always moving.
Then I walk in my home and everything changes,
Candies are spicy and salty
When I visit grandma in beautiful Mexico,
Buildings have flat rooftops,
And houses are painted bright blues and pretty pinks.
Streets are crowded with food like steak tacos with spicy salsa,
And sweet fruit drizzled with tangy chamoy.
I come home and I smell carne asada,
(thin steak seasoned and marinated)
and eat fruit with chile powder.
We dance along to romantic banda music,
And and fast zapateado songs.
We speak “el lenguaje del amor”
The language of spanish.
I am from two different worlds.
That are hard to combine.
They are water and oil.
I’ve tried to mix them over and over,
but they always divide.
I have learned to love them still,
They both will forever be my home.
And that is just something I would never change.
These two different worlds have given me the right,
To proudly call myself Mexican-American.

I grew up knowing two different places in my childhood. I would like to use this poem to embrace both my cultures. I am very proud of where I'm from. This poem means a lot to me and I really hope it can be used for others to also understand and love my culture the way I do.
