Der Supermarkt Idyll
To live in Germany,
To spend hours in the Getrankemart.
The endless pallets of beverages,
Primaily beer and liquor.
To enter into the Supermarkt
Constantly filled with fresh produce.
To the dairy section where,
The eggs are provided by neighbor.
And the milk is maybe two days old
Milked, a kilometer down the street.
To submit a deposit to use the cart
For the biweekly shopping trip.
To the butcher, where the scent
Of every cut of meat fills the air.
To the candy section where
Haribo rules the aisle.
To visit on Saturday mornings,
When the fishermen return from weeklong trips.
To live in a foreign place
And see their different taste.

This piece is based on the two years that I spent living in a small group of villages in Germany. While living abroad, I experienced the way of life of both the remote villages and the large cities. When I was in a large city, I could almost feel like I was in an American city, but life in the small towns was extremely different. The poem is based on these experiences.
