Voice 1

I am a police officer

and I’ve witnessed people die.

It’s not right.

People die for pointless purposes,

I’ve seen it happen.

My fellow officers die

and people they try to save die.

Officers have killed before.

They ruin what we work for.

People don’t feel safe coming to us.

I ask if they’re okay,

I ask questions,

How can we make it better?

It’s rooted in the past . . .

One Night

I was on patrol.

I saw a confrontation

between an officer I knew

and a black man.

The black man was shot;

the officer killed him.

It wasn’t right.

The officer felt threatened

when the man didn’t do much.

Blaring noises erupted through the night

as the ruby red ambulance

rushed to the scene.

Crowds of people formed a circle,

I had to hold them back.

I knew they were hurt

and didn’t want me there.

We barely made way for
the ambulance.

We took the officer away,

We were nervous.

It’s what started

The Movement.

One year later,

Blue Lives Matter

We fight for our lives,

no hate crime.

We want to help people

without getting killed.

We want justice for our fallen brothers

and to stop it from happening again.

Everyday

We fear for our lives.

Anyone could kill us

at any time.

We protect the people

as much as we can

by putting our lives on the line.

Everyday

The movement is not well known

but has a strong message.

We must unite to remain strong

and broadcast our purpose.

We want justice.

And freedom.

And equality.

United

Voice 2

I am a black person

and I’ve witnessed people persecuted.

It’s not right.

People die for pointless purposes,

I’ve seen it happen.

My friends die

and people they know die.

Officers killed them.

They ruin the idea of protection.

We don’t feel safe coming to the police.

We shy away.

We don’t want to answer.

How can we make it better?

It’s rooted in the past . . .

One Night

I was walking home.

I saw a confrontation

between a police officer

and my friend.

My friend was shot;

the officer killed him.

It wasn’t right.

The officer felt threatened

when my friend didn’t do much.

Blaring noises erupted through the night

as the ruby red ambulance

rushed to the scene.

Others and I formed a circle,

another officer held us back.

We were hurt

and didn’t want more officers.

We moved out of the way of

the ambulance.

It took my friend away,

We were angry.

It’s what started

The Movement.

Black Lives Matter

Officers made one too.

We fight for our lives,

no violence and racism.

We want to help our families

by not getting killed.

We want justice for our fallen brothers

and to stop it from happening again.

Everyday

We fear for our lives.

Anyone could kill us

at any time.

We protect ourselves

as much as we can

by being careful.

Everyday

The movement is well known

and has a strong message.

We must unite to remain strong

and broadcast our purpose.

We want justice.

And freedom.

And equality.

United

The author's comments:

The two voices are meant to be read parallel to each other.

Also, the picture might not represent my work because I was unable to see the pictures.

I want to become a police officer and think it's important for people to see the two sides to an issue and not apply stereotypes. I think people should see that every life matters.
