A Good Man

Now delivered from

this dungeon, this gaol

I am more than something written

this door, this heavy door

that I have now opened

letting loose my emotions

like birds from a cage.

Yes, emotions! The heart of stone

has been broken and with it

the chain of arrogance.

Where is it now ? The old parchment

is gone. The rays of freedom

I embrace. I savour

this breath of fresh air while

the echos of the chirruping

fill me. Yes, I am more than

what was written: human.

The author's comments:

This poem reflects on what it means to be a good man. It is against toxic masculinity and expectations of men to always be tough and numb to their emotions.
