Darkness

You are eerie,

You are ugly,

You are frightening.

You are the monster that follows me into the woods.

Your grip tightening.

You fill me with dread, fear, and sadness.

You don’t let go, for I am your prey.

You stop as a bright light fills in.

The moon and stars have come to save me,

As you fear the light.

You tremble in the moonlight,

As I did in you.

The moon shines brighter,

As you grow darker.

You make the light brighter,

Yet you expand with it.

I hold out my hand,

Welcoming you.

You come to me and stand beside me.

We stare at the moon.

For the darker you are,

The brighter the light.

The author's comments:

This poem tells of fear of darkness but how without it, the light wouldn't shine. The person telling the story welcomes the darkness even though they are afraid and by doing that they see the beauty of the night sky.
