Dear Alcohol

Dear Alcohol,

You ruin lives. You take lives. You change lives, and not for the better. You yawn in boredom, waiting to ruin, take, and change another life. You lure people in with the pretense of joy and relaxation and making their problems disappear like a rabbit into a hat.

You not only give headaches, but you are a headache. I crinkle my nose at the thought of you, however you have taught me so much. You have taught me how to be mature, how to love others when they can't love themselves, and how to support people unconditionally.

You constantly let people use and abuse you. Your unwarranted smile seduced my dad, you let him use and abuse you even though  you knew that the outcome would inevitably be tear jerking. Why do you let people abuse you?

I need to thank you. I need to thank you for being a weakness that allows people to become so battered and depressed that they are forced to pick themselves up again and call out for help. So yes, I hate you, but I really need to thank you for all that you have done.

My dad has struggled with alcoholism, which has really changed who I am and how I treat people. Alcohol changes people's lives in ways that you have never imagined.
