"You are what you read"

He shot the bird from out of the tree
I felt obligated to watch, a burden I carried
As he watched it fall from the tree

I didn’t feel anything for the bird
Maybe it deserved it, the tree shaking it off
Becoming bare and naked

I watch the dirt road for a while

My legs ace from sitting on the ground
As he starts the fire
I watched as he plucked the feathers
I was as empty as the beer can lying next to him
I invited the smoke, from the fire
Into my lungs

I watch as he cooks the bird, no remorse
He tries to shoot down more birds
I want to go inside but my body won't move
The bird is done cooking
He hands me a piece
Tells me to eat
He says he won't tell, like I haven't

In that moment he confesses to the crime I've always wondered about
I knew what he did
He shot me out of my tree
I am the bird, that fell
On to his grill
And I watched myself burn
