You Are
You are not your age
Nor the size of clothes you wear
You are not your weight
Or the color of your skin
You are not your name
Or the grades you recieve
You are all the books you read
And all the words you speak
You are your morning voice you try to hide
And all the smiles that follow you
You are your sweet laughter you've shared
And every tear you've ever cried
You're the songs you sing loudly in the shower
And the places that you have been
You are the people that you love
And the photos in your bedroom
You are the futures you dream of
And the career you may choose.
You are made of so much beauty
But it seems you have started to believe
That you are defined by everything you're not.

I wrote this poem because our society has taught kids that in order to have worth it comes from physical objects and how you look. For a very long time I thought the same thing. I had such low self esteem and now that I don't care about how I may appear I have a lot more confidence in myself.
My hope is that teenage girls and boys all over the world realize that their worth is not defined by their skin color, or the way their hair looks. No one should have their worth determined by a name, race, age, beauty, grade, or body. My hope is that my poem reaches a person who needs to hear this today.
