I want to be that girl

with light hair

that catches in the sun.

As light as the wheat

in the heart of the Great Plains.

Translucent,

Pure.

I want pale skin,

that shudders under the kiss of snow.

Transparent.

Showing my throbbing veins

and running life.

Mississippi River etched in my skin.

I want that two-story house

with the white fence necklace.

And rose bushes guarding

the house from the “danger”

of the world.

Maybe then I can be a real “American Girl”

Maya Nalawade loves poetry. You can usually find her writing poems in her room while listening to anything from Bollywood to Beyonce. You can find some of her other poems online or through other lit magazines.
