The Sea
The sea is calm and peaceful. I could sit for hours, just watching the waves dance across the shore and feeling the gentle warmth of golden sunlight braising my cheek. The sounds of the sea fill the air with a soft constant hum, a lullaby coaxing me to close my eyes. The urge to lay down and sleep is unbearable, but I can’t pull my eyes from the sunset now descending to the horizon. The ocean, a miraculous oasis and a gift from the light. Each day brings opportunities for laughter and love. But each night, darkness consumes the diamond waters, unleashing the fury of the ocean. It’s an unruly force, devoted to havoc and destruction. An infernal doppelganger set out to erase all the peace and serenity the day had brought. The eerie light of the full moon enthralls the murky waters. Waves become reckless and tempestuous, crashing mercilessly into ships and rocks. While currents lurk stealthy in the depths, yearning for an oblivious victim to fall into their covetous grasp. It seems, at this time, that the world may never be peaceful again, but remain in a state of violence and chaos for all eternity. But with first light, the current retreats and the waves slow to their soothing, perpetual rhythm. By the time the sun has lifted from the horizon, the sea has transformed to a sanctuary for beauty, and tranquility. And I can return once more to my spot by the water, where I sit, and watch as the waves crash against the shore.
