Wolves
To escape from the light would be a blessing, but it remains
Unbroken like the silence that accompanies the dark,
A silence that is as hard to bear as light itself
From which a single wolf cannot escape.
Let he out a howl - there is no reason -for there
Is naught for which he must say.
And so he remains a loner and no other wolf shall find him,
And he must bear the loneliness and the silence and the light.
His own silence echoes in the emptiness, magnifying his solitude,
A plea for darkness, a brief reprieve from never ending grief.
At last his query, answered;
Evening falls, bringing with it sleep.
All across the land, sounds seem muffled;
Every scurry, every scuffle, every rustle of trees
Dampened by the night --
By the very absence of the light.
Yet one sound was not subdued,
The footsteps of a single other;
A she-wolf in all her beauty,
Treads a path of evening grace.
Upon her heart is not one blemish,
Beating bright and scarlet full.
Looked he up, and padded soft
To twine his neck with hers.
They stood together,
And their beating hearts thrummed in rhythm.
Driving out the silence they had so long been given.
And when the dawn broke once again,
The light was still and heat unbroken.
But he had found the answer to his silent query
And they could bear through light and darkness all.
